The Grand – Birmingham GRP Dormer Opportunities

Stormking have been involved in the design and build of GRP dormer roofs for the refurbishment of The Grand Hotel on Colmore Row, Birmingham. The project which started in the middle of 2014, sees a total refurbishment of the Grand Hotel building, and Stormking have been tasked to create new dormers from the original old designs. To use traditional materials would have been time consuming and a costly exercise, so a Stormking GRP dormer roof, pre-manufactured off site, to match exactly as the original designs, benefited both the builder and the designers.

The pattern work is well underway for the construction of the new dormer windows for The Grand Hotel roof scheme. This process involves the creation of the full dormer offsite based on the original designs, from which a GRP mould is cast.  This mould is then used to create the new GRP dormers that will be brought to site and installed at The Grand Hotel.

The Grand is one of Birmingham’s most iconic buildings, occupying a prominent and imposing position on Colmore Row, which is traditionally the City’s most prestigious address within the business district. Once fully refurbished its planned uses include a luxury hotel with extensive conference and banqueting facilities, offices and a mixture of retail and leisure accommodation.
