Bay Window Roofs

Bay Window Roofs Technical & Design FAQs

Why is the STORMKING Bay window roof different?

STORMKING are the only manufacturers who have obtained BBA Certification, this is the only Independent Accreditation recognised by Building Control to satisfy the Building Regulations.

What is a ‘Standard’ bay roof?

We have over 500 bay moulds in all styles and to suit standard window sizes in either 45 or 90 degree configurations – check out our options by getting your designer to log on to the drawings section of this web page.

What ‘U’ values are the roofs?

We only use an Eco friendly loose quilt insulation and the designs can be adapted to provide ‘U’ values and Psi values for the highest Code levels.

How long will GRP last?

The ‘Building Research Establishment’ (BRE) carried out an investigation in 2003 (IP 10/03) to establish the durability of GRP and concluded that service lives of 60 to 100 years can be obtained.

Will GRP discolour or fade?

STORMKING only use the finest pigment additives and coatings, like all external finishes they will be effected by weathering and ultra-violet rays. Over a long period of time this will cause some slight fading on the areas exposed to the sunlight. With very little care and maintenance the products will remain in pristine condition for many, many years.

Can we have sizes for cavity tray installation?

Yes we can provide detailed drawings for the installation of cavity trays and flashings.

Bay Window Roofs Installation FAQs

What are the most common installation faults that your repair team come across?

The lead flashing MUST be at least 150mm deep and fully cover the GRP flashing/fixing up stand. In exposed locations a lead adhesive can be used on the flashing to stop the rain from blowing under the lead over-flashing.

The lead over-flashing should go past the end of the GRP fixing/flashing by at least 150mm.

  • The lead over-flashing should go past the end of the GRP fixing/flashing by at least 150mm.
  • The roof should be fixed as our instructions and bolted to the wall and fixed down to the window head.

Are fixings included with STORMKING products?

No, because of the wide variety of external wall construction types (solid, hollow bricks, rendered concrete blocks etc.) we can only recommend the sizes of the bolts that our Structural engineer has stipulated in their calculations.

Remember – GRP is easy to repair, like a car body filler, small repair kits including paint, for use on site are available for all our products – E-Mail sales@stormking.co.uk giving site, plot and product details.

Bay Window Roofs Health & Safety FAQs

How easy are they to offload & install?

Each STORMKING bay window roof is supplied shrink wrapped and labelled, including the weight and can be either manhandled or offloaded using a forklift; the roofs they can then be transported and installed easily on site.

What other recommendations do you have?

Be very careful when fixing our ‘ready to tile’ bay window roofs, they must be bolted as the fixing instructions. Traditional concrete or clay tiles can be extremely heavy and STORMKING bay roofs are designed to take this load but only when the correct bolts are used.

Bay Window Roofs Environmental FAQs

How ‘Green’ are Stormking's GRP products?

Our Environmental data is contained in the Setting the Standards - Environmental Policies section, follow this link for all the documentation.

Not surprisingly STORMKING is the only GRP building product manufacturer with ISO14001 Certification which shows our ongoing commitment to our Environmental Policies.

We only source FSC or similar accredited timber products and remember a prefabricated product from STORMKING requires only one lorry to transport it to site instead of multiple deliveries when supplied independently to make traditionally.

There is also NO WASTE with a STORMKING prefabricated product, they are fully assembled and finished for easy and safe installation.

ClearLight

Gossip! – Look out for our NEW Apex style Clearlight.

ClearLight Installation FAQs

What are the most common installation faults that your repair team come across?

  • When fitting a canopy to an external wall the brickwork or render may not be level, don’t tighten the bolts fully until you have ‘squared’ the canopy up with packers or shims. This small detail will make the finished installation look level.
  • The canopies must be bolted to the wall in accordance with the fixing instructions.

ClearLight Health & Safety FAQs

CopeKing

CopeKing Technical & Design FAQs

What is STORMKING’s CopeKing?

CopeKing is a lightweight reproduction stone coping which uses a simple clip system to fix.

Why is it different to other systems?

The Coping system although a solid moulding is very lightweight and extremely robust, it also has the benefit of having a completely dry fixing system.

Why was it developed?

STORMKING developed this unique product to overcome fixing problems with traditional stone coping and when used on timber frame or similar types of construction where differential settlement occurs.

How easy is it to fix?

The solid copings use a simple plastic clip fixed to a plywood plate.

Can it be cut on site?

The solid copings can be cut to length on site using a fine toothed hand saw.

What colours are available?

The ‘standard’ colours are to match Bath, Portland & York stone but it can be easily manufactured in any RAL colour to order.

How long will GRP last?

The ‘Building Research Establishment’ (BRE) carried out an investigation in 2003 (IP 10/03) to establish the durability of GRP and concluded that service lives of 60 to 100 years can be obtained.

Over a long period of time this will cause some slight fading on the areas exposed to the sunlight. With very little care and maintenance the products will remain in pristine condition for many, many years.

CopeKing Installation FAQs

What are the most common installation faults that your repair team come across?

  • The fixing strip which is fixed to the plywood plate HAS to be screwed down with 2 rows of screws about 80mm apart to hold the clip firmly down.
  • The plywood fixing board has not been fixed adequately to the top of the wall.
  • The stop ends have a separate tie which stops any slipping of the coping, these must be installed as the instructions.

Remember – GRP is easy to repair, like a car body filler, small repair kits including paint, for use on site are available for all our products – E-Mail sales@stormking.co.uk giving site, plot and product details.

CopeKing Health & Safety FAQs

How easy are they to offload & install?

The copings are supplied in 1m lengths and can be easily handled on site, the clip system is simplicity itself.

Has it been tested?

Yes, the coping system has been tested at the Building Research Establishment (BRE) at wind speeds of over 120mph.

Are there any other H & S benefits?

Using heavy products and working from height is a big problem on building sites, using a lightweight dry fix coping system greatly reduces the risk.

Door & Window Surrounds

Door & Window Surrounds Technical & Design FAQs

Why are STORMKING Door & Window surrounds different?

STORMKING are the only manufacturers who use RTM moulding techniques in the manufacture of the majority of our entrance canopies. RTM gives a higher quality finish, is safer to handle on site and better for the Environment.

What is a ‘Standard’ Door surround?

We have the largest selection of Door Heads & Pilaster moulds in all styles and finishes, to give a traditional or contemporary look – check out our options by getting your designer to log on to the drawings section of this web page.

What do we need to look for?

  • Check that there is not an electric meter box close to the pilaster which could clash on the side.
  • Beware of string courses and plinth bricks, if necessary choose a deeper pilaster to cut around the brickwork.
  • If you want the pilaster to return into the door aperture make sure the internal size is long enough – if in doubt ask.
  • If using an entrance canopy with a pair of pilasters it looks better to have moulded brackets included.

Any other design tricks?

Of course, that’s what we are here for. To make a bigger design statement consider using a false fanlight panel over the door opening – we have a range of sizes available.

  • The pilasters may need scribing to the brickwork or door frame, do this as neatly as possible, a thick mastic joint looks unsightly.
  • Use a timber batten fixed to the external wall to fix the pilasters too, a small poly pin is less obtrusive than a screw and cap cover on the pilaster side.
Remember – GRP is easy to repair, like a car body filler, small repair kits including paint, for use on site are available for all our products – E-Mail sales@stormking.co.uk giving site, plot and product details.

Dormers

Dormer Technical & Design FAQs

Why is the STORMKING dormer roof different?

STORMKING are the only manufacturers who have obtained BBA Certification, this is the only Independent Accreditation recognised by Building Control to satisfy the Building Regulations.

What is a ‘Standard’ dormer?

We have over 500 dormer moulds in all styles and to suit standard window sizes and roof pitches – check out our options by getting your designer to log on to the drawings section of this web page.

What ‘U’ values are the roofs?

We only use a sprayed foam insulation which provides a range of ‘U’ values, we can design the internal structure to suit the value that you require. Our WARMA DORMA design provides ‘U’ values and Psi values for the highest Code levels.

Do we supply the windows?

No, the windows are fitted into the opening which is reinforced to receive the fixings, a stop is provided to locate the frame and sealant is applied to finish off externally.

Do we need special tiles and are traditional roofing methods OK?

All STORMKING dormers include ‘Dry fix’ abutment flashings and compressible foam to act as a filler to stop birds & insects. Normal tiling procedures are used and like all roofs gauges and coursing should be carefully set out prior to starting the tiling.

Dormer Installation FAQs

What are the most common installation faults that your repair team come across?

  • The lead flashing MUST be supported with a timber fillet or lay-board otherwise the water will pond below the dormer front and leak sideways under the tiles.
  • The side gutters are not fitted as our instructions, there should be a continuous batten under the outer edge which is screwed to a rafter or ply decking. If the tiling battens are forced under the gutter this will make the edge stand up and the tiles will kick up.
  • If not hoisted correctly with the lifting beams damage can occur to the side gutters, this can be repaired but needs to be done before any tiling takes place.

Remember – GRP is easy to repair, like a car body filler, small repair kits including paint, for use on site are available for all our products – E-Mail sales@stormking.co.uk giving site, plot and product details.

Dormer Health & Safety FAQs

How easy are they to offload & install?

Each STORMKING dormer includes sacrificial lifting beams, by using a tellyhoist or forklift the roofs can be transported and installed easily on site.

What other recommendations do you have?

Take a look at our Pre-Tiled Apex and Hip style dormers – these eliminate the risk of falling from height when tiling the dormers traditionally without an independent dormer scaffold. One accident is one too many.

We have over 500 entrance canopy moulds in all styles and finishes, to give a traditional or contemporary look – check out our options by getting your designer to log on to the drawings section of this web page.

Do we need gallows brackets to support the canopy?

No, for example on our flat canopy range we have designed internal steel brackets which support the canopy when bolted as our engineers recommendations. We can also supply posts, trellis, columns and steel brackets if required.

Are all STORMKING canopies GRP?

No we have a range of Polycarbonate and steel canopies called ‘ClearLight’ – your designer can check out the variations available – NEW Apex styles just arrived!

What sizes of GRP canopies are available?

Our standard GRP canopies can be manufactured up to 5m long and 1.5m projection, larger sizes can be bolted together on site.

SmartStack

SmartStack GRP Chimneys Technical & Design FAQs

Why is the STORMKING SmartStack GRP chimney different?

STORMKING are the only manufacturers who have obtained BBA Certification, this is the only Independent Accreditation recognised by Building Control to satisfy the Building Regulations.

What is a ‘Standard chimney’?

We have several styles and to suit standard roof pitches with either 1 or 2 pots – check out our options by getting your designer to log on to the drawings section of this web page.

How do the chimneys look like the facing bricks?

We colour match the chimneys with special pigments using sample bricks from either the manufacturer or from site.

Can we have a gable end GRP chimney?

We do not recommend that GRP chimneys are positioned on the gable end, we can offer a brick slip alternative if really necessary.

Do we need any special skills to fix the chimneys?

No, all the chimneys come completely assembled and include all abutment AND lead apron flashings. The SmartStack is simply the easiest chimney to install and will not leak!

How long will GRP last?

The ‘Building Research Establishment’ (BRE) carried out an investigation in 2003 (IP 10/03) to establish the durability of GRP and concluded that service lives of 60 to 100 years can be obtained.
